Centennial Events

As was one of three founding units when the University of the Philippines was first constituted in 1908, the UP College of Fine Arts (UP CFA) is celebrating its 100th year anniversary in 2008.

On this occasion UP CFA looks back to a rich and groundbreaking history which mirrors landmark developments in Philippine art.

The UP College of Fine Arts has produced nine National Artists to date, and it will produce many more as it continues in its mission to lead and trail blaze in Philippine art and design.

Watch for the following CFA centennial events in 2008.

The Tide Of Modernism : UP College Of Fine Arts (1948-1970)

An exhibition of works from the exclusive and private collection of Dr. Eleuterio Pascual, showing the pedagogical path of the modernists who broke away from the traditional movement at the UP School of Fine Arts. (1908- 1970).

The search for undiscovered progressive artistic minds and talent in the Philippine art scene brought about the Thirteen Artists Awards of the Cultural Center of the Philippines. It was conceived and organized by Prof. Roberto chabet who was then teaching at the UP College of Fine Arts.

Artmaking and Artmakers in the School of Fine Arts (1908-1948)

You are all invited to the UP College of Fine Arts' exhibition opening of HEROES ANONIMOUS Of a Brilliant Struggle: Artmaking and Artmakers of the School of Fine arts (1908-1948) on Thursday, January 31, 2008 at 5 pm at the Metropolitan Museum of Manila on Roxas Blvd. next to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.

The exhibition, curated by Philippine art historian and UP CFA faculty Prof. Santiago Pilar, ushers in the centennial year of the College of Fine Arts, as one of the founding units when UP was constituted in 1908. It features works and artists from an unheralded chapter in Philippine art and the UP College of Fine arts from 1908-1948 (pre-war).

Thesis Grantees Exhibition

Outstanding thesis works and projects of 27 (twenty seven) senior graduating students of the UP College of Fine Arts are being recognized in this exhibition as the 2008 grantees of the first-ever Thesis Support Fund for Student Artists and Designers, a project of the Office of the Chancellor and the UP College of Fine Arts.

ARTISTA, DIBUHISTA, MANLILIKHA: Paghubog at Paghiwatig
(Artist, Designer and Creator: Form and Media)

An Illustration, Advertising and Design Exhibition that takes off from the Heroës Anónimos theme of the continuous struggle of the artist as illustrator, creative art director, advertising and industrial designer. Works by Fernando Amorsolo, Guillermo Tolentino, Irineo Miranda, Botong Francisco, Larry Alcala, reflect the development of the commercial arts curriculum of the UP College of Fine Arts from the 1920s to to the present visual communications and industrial design programs.

UP CFA College Faculty Conference

The faculty of the UP College of Fine Arts "returned" and discovered the first home of the UP School of Fine Arts then called Escuela de Bellas Artes. This school which was the residence of Rafael Enriquez the first director of the CFA was dismantled from its original location in R. Hidalgo in Quaipo, and reassembled and reconstructed at its new site in Bagac, Bataan.

Sibol 2008

UP College of Fine Arts honors its 2007-08 student winners of national art competitions with SIBOL, an exhibition that celebrates the bright promise of young student artists. Featured are the top grand prize winners of the 2007 SHELL national art competition, Michael Uy (first prize Sculpture) and Gino Bueza (first prize Painting) and 13 semi finalists.

2008 FA Week

This year's College of Fine Arts Week will be in sync with the UP centennial theme of "UP ang Galing Mo!".

The FA WEEK, bannered as "Kami ang Bida, Walang Kokontra!", is organized by the College of Fine Arts Student Council together with the various student organizations in the College. The week long events at the College of Fine Arts grounds will be a celebration and a showcase of various arts and design activities including 1) "Art Wall Painting" by students, faculty and alumni, 2) "Art and Design Job Fair", 3) Seminars and Fora on issues affecting student artists such as Intellectual Property Rights, Ethics in the Workplace , Comic Illustration and Animation, Imaging and Advertising, Performance Arts, film screenings and cultural shows.
